HOMETOWN: POWHATAN, VIRGINIA
Chapter 887 of the Vietnam Veterans of America proudly salutes our very
own hero: Jackie Hicks. Jackie recently returned to Vietnam,
and his hometown newspaper, "Powhatan Today" recognized this quiet hero
with a lengthy article which recounted his courageous service in the war.
Jackie, a 1966 graduate of Pocahontas High School, was drafted in October
1967 as a US Army Infantryman, and was sent to Vietnam in March 1968,
shortly after the Tet offensive. He was seriously wounded near the
Cambodian border. He had taken part in more than 25 aerial combat assault
missions by helicopter in hostile territory.
He was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Presidential
Vietnam citation award, the Vietnam Air Medal, the National Defense
Service Medal, the Vietnam Service medal, the Republic of Vietnam
Campaign Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
